Huescar

An introduction into the area and history around Huescar!

We are situated north of Granada in the province of Andalucia, the edge of which is known as the Altiplano or ‘the high plane’.  It is fairly high too, Huescar is 953 meters above sea level and the sierras around are much higher.  The largest local mountain, La Sagra, at nearly 2400 meters is one of the highest in Spain.  The area has been populated and farmed since pre-historic time and there is much evidence of its antiquity if one chooses to look.  Indeed as the area becomes more popular, with predominantly Spanish tourists, the local town halls and other groups are accessing grants to develop educational facilities and exhibitions to show off the areas history. Caves Revealed

Man has lived in caves since we learned to walk erect, for pretty much the same reason some of us still do today. They are dry, easy to heat and safe. Nowadays, of course you don’t have to share with bears or bats! It all sounds a bit outlandish to modern man, but all across Europe people still live in burrows, particularly in areas of Turkey and Spain.

In fact, there are still a few inhabited caves in Scotland and better known are those just outside Stourbridge in the West Midlands. These are now the responsibility of the National Trust, and are particularly damp and nasty, but were used as permanent residences until barely 20 years ago.

Obviously, the level of desirability depends on the type of ground the cave is constructed in and in this respect the caves in this part of Northern Andalucia have many advantages, as is proved by the huge number that exist here. The area is made up of sedimentary rock, laid down over the millennia in layers of clay and stones, and is relatively soft but at the same time impermeable and strong in compression and consequently perfect for excavating holes to live in. About Us

My name is Duncan Hawking and my wife, Annette, and I moved here, from Exeter over six years ago.  We had a fish & chip shop in Exeter for nearly 10 years and for 6 years of those we also owned a specialist reptile breeding shop, before which we lived on a boat for 7 years so we are used to living in unusual, out of the ordinary homes.

In the past, I have also built boats, delivered boats and road raced motorbikes for fun but although it was lots of fun it was far too expensive to continue. After 10 years of running the fish & chip shop, the disillusionment and pressures of running a small business, made us decide to start afresh somewhere in Europe.
We looked all over Europe to find right place to live and settled on Huescar, in North-eastern Andalucia after a long search.

What appealed to us was that it was a nice town, unspoilt with all the services that we needed. You can get broadband and also watch the man olive picking with his donkey on the side of the dual carriageway.
So we bought a Cave House that needed work doing to it. Read More...
